My birdhouses are the ultimate
" Expression of Home."
When I first began building birdhouses they were of the leavings, whether weathered wood or rusty tools,
from the farm where I was raised and still live. Unpainted wood that has aged with the years attains a gentle patina. It does not need to become a part of place, it already is, as also are the old, and rusty objects that find a home on my birdhouses. The fact that most of the materials used in my birdhouses would fit into the category of “reused” appeals to my sense of walking gently on this planet, our home, and not discarding things that could still find a use.
Beyond being an artistic expression,
my birdhouses are built to be an actual home for the birds. The entry hole and floor dimensions are specific to certain bird species, be they bluebirds and swallows, or chickadees, nuthatches, and downy woodpeckers, and the roofs are all hinged so the birdhouse can be cleaned out between seasons.
