Nora's Feathered Nest | James' Art

Artist Statement

James is a self taught artist who has painted since, as a teenager, he painted hot rods on the walls of his parents' pool hall in Pratt, Kansas.
Two weeks into his senior year of high school James left home and struck out on his own. He first went to Los Angeles, CA, working a series of jobs, in a bank, driving a dump truck, construction jobs, etc. He lived on the road for a couple of years enjoying the adventure and lack of responsibility.
James After marrying James worked in the trades, as a carpenter for about 20 years in Washington State.
James has consistently painted over the years. His art is "instructed" by his work and one can see the various influences in his work. He has painted for about 40 years.
When James and his family moved to Creston, BC James was 42. He had never farmed before but took on the family farm as a new challenge. The instruction manuals for the various implements were his "bed time reading" for the first few years. In the same way, James enjoys each new artistic challenge.
James finds art a great way to discover oneself. Self taught, James likes to let his brush do the talking. He paints from an intuitive process and likes to leave things open so he can learn new things. He says he leaves his work open to the viewer's interpretation, not making works steeped in hidden political meanings, but creating interesting pictures.
